Blockage in NYC

BLOCKAGE fuses East Coast Ramones-core with the melodic hooks of SoCal punk.

We formed in Los Angeles in 1999 and respawned in New York City in 2024. Our bi-coastal sound feels like a grungy evolution of the golden Lookout! Records era mixed with elements of 1970s punk. Our style was forged in L.A.’s underground and honed through years of tearing through just about every dive bar and venue in Southern California, often sharing bills with the punk icons that inspired us.

Our songs come out swinging, balancing biting social commentary with the everyday sloppiness of being human. Too melodic for hardcore purists and too raw for the mainstream, Blockage carves out a dark, catchy strain of punk-pop with a voice all our own.

Our latest full-length release, The Very Very Worst of Blockage (2022), is a raw and relentless chronicle of our years in the L.A. punk underground, capturing the grit, grind, and gallows humor that have defined us from the start.

Our new NYC lineup is writing and recording our second full-length album, The Wonderful World of Blockage. We're doubling down on what sets us apart: varied tempos and dynamics, solid song structures, biting lyrics, and a complete disregard for whether anyone considers us a punk band. A remixed and remastered edition of The Very Very Worst will also drop in 2027, reintroducing our back catalog with fresh bite and venom.

MAKING A SCENE

In 2005, our residency at the notorious biker bar The Anarchy Library in Downey, CA launched the recurring event Punk Rock Social - LIVE, booked and promoted by Blockage's Sean Rowley with his wife Julia. The shows quickly gained a reputation for their curated lineups, door prizes and collectable posters. PRS-LIVE blended local talent with national touring acts and celebrated local legends in a unique “Mix, Mingle, Mosh” atmosphere.

In 2007 the event found its true home at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, CA, where it ran as a monthly event until 2010, with additional shows at The Roxy, Safari Sam's, The Glass House, The Knitting Factory and a SXSW Showcase in Austin, TX. In 2023, Punk Rock Social held a string of shows at Knitting Factory NoHo before the venue unexpectedly shut its doors.

Bands that have played Punk Rock Social include Youth Brigade, D.O.A., Naked Raygun, Ben Weasel/Screeching Weasel (first LA show), Teenage Bottlerocket, The Muffs, The Groovie Ghoulies, The Queers, The Donnas, The Vibrators, Throw Rag, J.F.A., The Meatmen, The Dickies, Dr. Know, The Generators, Zero Boys, The Skulls, Dayglo Abortions, The Methadones, Lower Class Brats, The Dwarves, Channel 3, Angry Samoans, Betty Blowtorch, Donita Sparks, Jennifer Finch’s The Shocker, Texas Terri, D.I. and many more.

Punk Rock Social shows are currently on hiatus, but we're not done. Whether it’s promoting shows in NY, long-distance shows in SoCal, festival stages, or something we haven’t thought of yet… we will return!
